Gelatin vs vegan (HPMC) capsules: which suits your supplement?
Gelatin vs HPMC (vegan) capsule shells for supplements: what each is made from, how they behave with different fills, and what to consider for your product.
Hard capsule shells are usually made from gelatin or from hypromellose (HPMC), a plant-derived cellulose. Both work well; the right choice depends on your fill, your customers and your cost.
Gelatin capsules
Made from animal-derived gelatin. They are widely available and usually the lower-cost option. Gelatin shells hold some moisture, which can matter for fills that are sensitive to moisture.
HPMC (vegan) capsules
Made from plant cellulose, so they suit vegetarian and vegan products. They hold less moisture than gelatin, which can suit moisture-sensitive fills. They usually cost more than gelatin.
Other things to consider
Dietary or religious requirements: the source and certification of the shell matter
Fill properties: how the powder flows and how much fits in each capsule size
Your label: shell type is part of the product specification
