Capsules, tablets or powders: choosing a dosage form for your supplement
How to choose between capsules, tablets, powders and liquids for a supplement or listed medicine, with the strengths and watch-outs of each format.
The right format depends on the dose size, the ingredients and how your customer will take the product.
Capsules
Best for moderate doses, ingredients with a strong taste or smell, and vegan products using HPMC shells. The dose per capsule is limited by capsule size, so large doses may need several capsules.
Tablets
Best for higher doses per unit, a lower cost per unit at volume, and coatings that make swallowing easier. Some ingredients need extra excipients or development work to press well.
Powders (tubs, sachets and stick packs)
Best for large doses such as protein, collagen, electrolytes and greens. Taste, mixability and moisture protection matter more.
Liquids
Best for children's products and people who dislike swallowing pills. Preservation and shelf-life testing need care.
Starting small
Many brands start with capsules because small runs are simple and reformulation is quick, then add tablets or powders as they grow. DB Pharmaceuticals runs capsule filling, tablet pressing and powder blending on one site in Kings Park, Sydney, so a blend can go into any of these formats.
